A crown is a “capping” that is custom-made to fit over a specially prepared tooth to improve its strength and appearance. Crowns can be placed over front or back teeth and are permanently cemented in place. Crowns are normally made from ceramic, porcelain, porcelain on a metal backing or tooth coloured resin. It is uncommon for crowns to be made purely of metal these days.

A crown may be recommended to protect a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment, has a large filling (that may keep breaking for example), a cracked tooth or a poorly discoloured or shaped tooth.

Once the tooth has been specially prepared, it is scanned using modern digital technology, and constructed by a lab technician. It is then cemented in place permanently.
