Snoring can be a serious issue, impacting not only relationships but your health as well.

Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnoea which can impact your health and quality of life. Issues such as being overweight or obese, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, depression and asthma all have possible links to sleep apnoea.

If you think you are at risk of or are suffering from sleep apnoea, the first stop is your GP. Sleep studies may be required to determine the severity of sleep apnoea. Treatments can then be determined depending on the level of sleep apnoea that you suffer.

Moderate to severe cases of apnoea may involve a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. In mild cases of apnoea an anti-snore appliance may be the answer.

With sleep apnoea, the lower jaw and tongue drop back and can cause airway obstruction leading to snoring and interruption to the normal sleep pattern. Using an anti-snore appliance, or a mandibular advancement splint (MAS) is an effective way to reduce snoring in cases of mild sleep apnoea.

The MAS is an adjustable custom-made device made by a dental lab specialising in MAS devices and fitted by one of our dentists. Moulds or scans are taken of your teeth and sent to the dental lab for MAS construction. The MAS works by gently holding the lower jaw forward thereby opening the airway and reducing the chance of obstruction by the tongue and soft palate. By opening the airway, snoring is reduced, and a much better nights sleep is achieved (for both the wearer and their partner!).

By improving quality of sleep, health, mood and energy levels are noticeably improved in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle.
